Laser energy is delivered through a small handpiece operated by one of our nurses. The laser delivers an intense beam of light, which is absorbed by the skin and converted to heat. The heat safely and effectively damages the hair follicles by destroying its blood supply. The surrounding skin remains unaffected due to Candela’s patented Dynamic Cooling Device™ (DCD™), which prepares the skin for treatment by spraying the upper layer with a cooling burst of cryogen in adjustable durations—milliseconds before the laser pulse. For about six weeks prior to treatment, you should avoid plucking, threading, electrolysis, waxing, Nair and/or veet. Avoid intense direct sun exposure on the area to be treated for 1-2 weeks before and after treatment and apply sunblock (SPF 30 or above) on areas for day-to-day sun exposure. Do not expose the treatment area to sunlight or tanning booth light for 7-14 days prior to or 7-14 days immediately after treatment. If you have a history of herpes simplex virus, a prophylactic antiviral therapy may be prescribed. On the day of your treatment, skin should be clean-shaven and thoroughly cleansed of any makeup, creams, oils, topical anesthetics or self-tanning products
After your laser treatment, prevent sun exposure by applying sunblock (SPF 30 or above). In the first few days after treatment, don’t scrub or rinse the treated areas with abrasive skin cleansers. Side effects may include redness, swelling, hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, blistering and purpura (laser bruise) in the treated area—these usually do not last more than a few days.
